Q & A's

Becoming A UCSC-HBCU Research Fellow

Q&A

The UCSC-HBCU Network for Success in the Chemical and Biological Sciences was made to cultivate a collaborative and supportive network for young scientists to flourish in. We hope we can answer some questions you have here and if you still have questions, please contact our Director Prof. Phil Crews at pcrews@ucsc.edu.

Q: What is funding like for each individual in the program?

A: Each selected student from each school will receive: $6,000 stipend, $4,890 for housing and meals, $1,000 for travel, and each participating lab receives $500 for student supplies.

Q: I don't have research experience - can I still apply to be a UCSC-HBCU Research Fellow?

A: Absolutely! We all have to start somewhere. We will tune your laboratory and research skills through this program.

Q: How long does each UCSC-HBCU Research Fellow spend at UC Santa Cruz?

A: Each UCSC-HBCU Fellow will spend 10-weeks at UCSC for two consecutive summers - each student will work with their home campus P.I. to maintain the research project during the academic year.

Q: How will the UCSC-HBCU Research Fellows be paired with UCSC Faculty?

A: Once you are selected to be a research fellow, UCSC faculty and the corresponding HBCU P.I. will discuss your research project and goals and pair you with someone of common interest.

Q: What is summer like in Santa Cruz?

A: Fair question! Santa Cruz is a coastal California community and the days are reliably 67-80 F and sunny! Some mornings are fogged in, but the campus is above the fog line and basically sunny all summer!

Q: As a UCSC-HBCU Research Fellow, what scientific and social support can I expect?

A: A lot - at the start of your research fellowship is an orienatation alongside new UCSC research interns. This will introduce you to scientific communication, data analysis, ethics in science, networking, and much more. Throughout the summer you have access to your home campus P.I., your UCSC P.I., and the whole team. We're here to guide you whenever needed!

Q: Where will I live during the summer research program?

A: You'll live on campus paired up with other UCSC-HBCU summer research interns - it's a very fun environment!
